Understanding and Supporting Children with Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health challenges in children today. While some worry and nervousness are natural, children with anxiety may struggle daily with overwhelming fears that interfere with school, friendships, and family life.

Recognizing the signs is the first step. Children may complain of frequent stomachaches, avoid school, become irritable, or cling to parents in new situations. Parents often mistake these behaviors as misbehavior or stubbornness when, in reality, they may be rooted in anxiety.

Supporting an anxious child begins with validation. Telling them, “I understand this feels scary for you,” reassures them that their feelings are real and respected. Encouraging deep breathing or relaxation strategies can help them calm their bodies in stressful moments.

It’s also important to gradually encourage bravery. For example, if a child fears speaking in class, start with small steps, like practicing at home, and slowly build toward bigger challenges. This teaches that anxiety can be managed with practice.

Parents should also remember to manage their own stress, since children often mirror adult behavior. Seeking support through therapy can help both children and parents learn coping skills.

With compassion, patience, and tools, children with anxiety can learn to face their fears and thrive.
