Mindfulness for children and teens

In today’s busy world, children and teens face constant stimulation—from schoolwork and social media to extracurricular activities. All of this can leave them feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Mindfulness, the simple practice of being present in the moment, is a powerful tool that can help young people build resilience, improve focus, and manage stress.

For children, mindfulness can be introduced in playful ways. Activities like mindful breathing—asking them to imagine blowing up a balloon with slow, deep breaths—make the practice engaging. Even one or two minutes of quiet focus can help a child settle their body and mind.

For teens, mindfulness can provide a healthy alternative to the constant pressures of academics, friendships, and social media. Encouraging mindful movement, such as yoga or walking meditation, helps teens connect with their bodies while easing anxious thoughts. Journaling about their day with attention to feelings and sensations is another effective tool.

Families can also practice mindfulness together. Shared moments of gratitude at the dinner table or a few minutes of guided meditation before bed foster connection and model healthy coping strategies.

Mindfulness doesn’t require special equipment or large amounts of time—it’s about weaving small moments of awareness into daily life. By learning mindfulness early, children and teens develop lifelong tools for emotional balance and well-being.
