When a child doesn't want to talk - helping kids open up

It can be frustrating and worrying when a child shuts down. Parents often ask, “How do I get them to tell me what’s going on?” The truth is, most kids don’t respond well to pressure. They open up when they feel safe, not cornered.

One of the most helpful shifts is moving from “interrogation mode” to “connection mode.” Instead of rapid-fire questions like “What happened?” or “Why won’t you tell me?”, try a softer approach: “I’m here if you want to talk,” or “I noticed you seem quieter today.” This communicates interest without demanding an immediate explanation.

Timing matters. Many kids talk more easily during low-pressure moments—while riding in the car, taking a walk, playing a game, or doing a shared task like cooking. Side-by-side conversations often feel less intense than face-to-face ones.

It’s also important to normalize feelings. Kids may not have the words for what they’re experiencing, or they may fear getting in trouble. You can help by labeling emotions gently: “Sometimes when kids feel overwhelmed, they get quiet,” or “It’s okay to feel embarrassed or upset.” When children see emotions as acceptable, they’re more likely to share them.

If your child does begin to talk, focus on listening first. Resist the urge to fix it immediately. A quick solution can unintentionally send the message, “Your feelings are a problem to solve,” rather than “Your feelings make sense.” A better first response is: “That sounds really hard,” or “Thank you for telling me.”

If shutting down becomes frequent, intense, or leads to school avoidance, sleep changes, or increased irritability, it may be time to bring in support. Therapy can help kids build emotional vocabulary and learn safe ways to express what they’re carrying.
